Earth and realm, Planets and globe,
Boundaries and borders, frontiers, the orders,
sanctions, permissions, mandates and consents,
the move, the change, and barters,
evolve, advance, divulge the canards.

Shadows unfurl, murmurs and purrs,
foretells, heralds. mumble, gabble,
the birds’ gully, canaries pucker,
pleas rebound, gestures gather.

Gorges, ravines, glare, stare,
burbles, babbles, whispers ascend,
eagles glide, coasting the air,
comforts, succors, succeed, prevail.

While,
tolerantly and cautiously, pliably and willingly,
the hills and summits, soils and trends,
reciprocate and respond, muster and surmount.

Sanctuaries, preserves, shelters and havens,
reserves and coffers, vary and alter,
salute and greet, welcome and sway,
ramble, trek, and trail, hikers and walkers,
esteem and observe, celebrate, honor.

The pace and steps, the leaps and hops,
rapidity and cadence, the lift and accent,
impair and amend, tweak and revise,
the earth, surroundings, reside and settle,
the tails and files, inhabit and dwell.

Arouse and stir, still———
the mazes and the webs, intricacies and tangles,
vivacities, sparkles, vigor, liveliness, fuse and meld,
flickers of dare, grips and bearings, the tads to defy,
would tame the wave, foment and ferment.

The sings and songs, carols and whispers,
tweaks and tugs, pinches, smidgens,
while, fiddles and swindles, they lose the favor,
depict horizons, skylines, scopes and fervors.

Preserves and shelters, havens and reserves,
the sanctities and virtues, emerge and surface,
miracles and wonders, engage and contest,
occur and arose, moments will ponder.

The coops and cages, hovels and hutches,
the egos, the essence, cognizant brains,
the dozed and snoozed, napped and slumbered,
discerning preceptors, sentient inceptors,
shall leave the shelters, will crack the shells.

Realms of conscious, urges and burdens,
bountiful dreams, empowered delights,
sparkle the palace, flicker the flow,
fruits keep falling, the falls keep rolling.

Shinning ivories, the coastal arcs,
do rage and crave, shall shine and glimmer
flourish desires, ascertain appeals,
the knocks on the door, would tinker the will.

Awe, melodies and tunes, bubbling springs,
shivers and shudders, resound the fire,
the center and core, the rings and the bands,
rejoice the hordes, reverberate the souls.

Conviction and faith, to soar and scale,
ruling and gauging, goaded and hurdled,
hovering, looming, state of heaven, bliss and rapture,
rhapsody and pearl, guarded and concealed,
solemnly within.

Themes & Interpretations

Earth as Interlocutor — “reciprocate and respond”

The poem’s most radical ecological claim appears at its first adversative hinge, stanza 4: the hills and summits, soils and trends, do not merely receive human presence — they reciprocate and respond, muster and surmount. The earth is not passive terrain but an interlocutor. It answers. It does so tolerantly and cautiously, pliably and willingly — the adverbs naming a patience that does not yield by weakness but by deep attentiveness. This reframes the entire poem: every stanza before and after is also the earth’s response to what has been spoken, walked, built, and dreamed upon it.

The Triple Adversative Hinge — While / still——— / while

Three pivots organize the poem’s middle movement: “While” (stanza 4), the em-dashed “still———” (stanza 7), and “while” again (stanza 8). Each is a different kind of concession. The first “While” opens into the earth’s patient reply. The mid-poem “still———” punctuates the pause before complexity erupts into vivacities and tangles. The second “while” introduces the trickster agents — fiddles and swindles — who lose the favor by seeking only surface. Together these three hinges trace the poem’s ethics: patience, complexity, and the cost of surface-seeking.

The Shell-Cracking — Awakening from Within

Stanza 10 is the poem’s most compressed philosophical declaration: coops, cages, hovels, hutches — the enclosures the dozing self inhabits — will be left; the shells will be cracked. Crucially, the agents are discerning preceptors and sentient inceptors: the awakening is not violent rupture but the action of perception and inception fully restored. The coops and cages are not broken from outside; they are left by a self that has become discerning enough to perceive their walls and sentient enough to begin anew.

Recursive Generation — “fruits keep falling, the falls keep rolling”

Stanza 11’s closing couplet is the poem’s most formally daring movement: “fruits keep falling, the falls keep rolling.” Falling is not conclusion — it is generation. The fall of the fruit generates the fall of the next, which generates the next. The recursive form enacts what it describes: the line keeps rolling forward by the same motion it names. This is the poem’s image of consciousness once awakened: it does not arrive at a destination but perpetually generates the next movement from within the motion of the last.

Solemnly Within — Planetary Scale to Interior Pearl

The poem opens at planetary scale — Earth, realm, planets, globe — and closes at the innermost register possible: “rhapsody and pearl, guarded and concealed, / solemnly within.” The pearl is not a destination reached by travel but a depth uncovered by the poem’s own descent. The final two words stand alone as a line, a stanza, a declaration: within is where the poem has always been heading. The fourteen stanzas are the distance between the planet’s surface and the self’s innermost guarded treasure.
